A severe storm triggered devastating flooding in an Argentine city, resulting in the death of at least 13 people. The disaster struck after eight hours of torrential rainfall, causing widespread destruction to roads and bridges.
More than 1,100 residents were forced to evacuate their homes, and much of the city remains without electricity. The situation unfolded in the port city of Bahía Blanca, located in the southwestern part of Buenos Aires Province. The relentless downpour led to buildings being flooded, and many areas of the city were left powerless.
Provincial authorities reported that over 400 mm (15.7 inches) of rain fell in Bahía Blanca on Friday, a city that typically receives around 600-650 mm of rainfall annually. The flooding also led to the evacuation of newborns from hospitals and turned surrounding areas into virtual islands.
Local officials warned that the death toll might rise. The provincial government is providing helicopters, ambulances, food, and water, while the coast guard assists with rescue operations.
Social media images showed vehicles being swept away by floodwaters. Bahía Blanca, home to over 330,000 people, now faces a long recovery. Provincial Minister Carlos Bianco said, “We need to rebuild our city. There are people who have lost everything.”
In addition, AFP reported that two children, aged four and one, were swept away by floodwaters and remain missing. The sudden flood submerged hospitals and isolated neighborhoods. The mayor’s office expressed concern about the possibility of more casualties, noting that at least five people died on flooded roads.
Authorities continue their search and rescue efforts, striving to support those affected by this natural disaster.
