Seaplane Crashes Near Rottnest Island, Australia: Three Missing and Four Injured

A tragic seaplane crash near Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Perth, has left three people missing and four others hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident, which occurred near Thompson Bay, prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving Water Police and several civilian vessels.

Witness Accounts

Tourist Greg Quin, who witnessed the crash, described the harrowing scene to the ABC.

“We saw the seaplane take off, but as it was just lifting off the water, it tipped over and crashed,” Quin said. “It was shocking to see. People on boats in the area rushed to help almost immediately, which was incredible.”

Despite these quick efforts, Quin noted the plane began drifting rapidly due to wind and currents. “It was pretty scary, and a lot of people nearby were visibly worried and unsure of what was happening,” he added.

Official Response

Western Australia Premier Roger Cook expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation.
“The images coming from Rottnest Island are very distressing,” he wrote on X. “My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I thank our first responders for their swift action. I am receiving updates as the situation develops.”

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch confirmed during a briefing that the crash occurred around 4 p.m., likely after the plane struck a rock at the entrance to Thompson Bay.

“Four individuals have been recovered from the water,” Commissioner Blanch stated, adding that their current conditions remain unclear. “We are working diligently to confirm the total number of passengers aboard the plane and the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

The Commissioner also praised the public’s response, highlighting the quick actions of civilians who rushed to assist. “Their efforts are greatly appreciated,” he said.
