French skier Cyprien Sarrazin has been discharged from intensive care following a successful surgery to address a brain bleed caused by a training accident.
The 30-year-old athlete was airlifted to a hospital after losing control during World Cup downhill training in Bormio, Italy, last Friday. Surgeons operated the same day to treat an intracranial haematoma.
“The patient’s condition is stable. He has been moved from intensive care to a general care unit,” the French Ski Federation announced on Thursday via X.
They added, “The medical assessment regarding his foot and knee pain is reassuring. Despite the impact’s severity, no additional injuries were identified. The timeline for his recovery remains unclear.”
Bormio has seen several skiing accidents over the past week as it prepares to host events for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Last Friday, Italy’s Pietro Zazzi also required hospitalization and surgery following a crash. Swiss skier Josua Mettler sustained knee injuries on the same day, while fellow Swiss athlete Gino Caviezel experienced a serious crash during Sunday’s World Cup Super-G and was airlifted to a hospital.
The men’s alpine skiing events for the 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Bormio, while the women’s competitions are set for Cortina d’Ampezzo, located approximately five hours away by car.
