Russian Hypersonic Weapons Struggle in Ukraine, Experts Say

April 20, 2025 – Ukraine: Russia’s deployment of hypersonic weapons in Ukraine, once touted as a revolutionary military advancement, has failed to deliver the expected impact on the battlefield. Despite possessing an arsenal that includes Avangard, Kinzhal, and Zircon missiles, Moscow has reportedly limited their use, citing production challenges and vulnerability to air defense systems.
Hypersonic Weapons Face Setbacks
Experts note that Russia’s hypersonic missile program, considered a world first in active warfare, has struggled due to engineering complexities and Western sanctions that have hindered large-scale production. Instead, Moscow has prioritized drones, which have proven more effective in combat.
Vulnerability to Air Defense
Reports indicate that Ukrainian forces have successfully intercepted multiple Kinzhal missiles using American Patriot air defense systems. In May 2023, Kyiv claimed its first successful interception, followed by six more within two weeks. Some sources suggest that the intercepted Kinzhals were traveling at lower speeds than expected, raising doubts about their true hypersonic capabilities.
Future Prospects
While Russian hypersonic weapons have underperformed, analysts believe that artificial intelligence and technological advancements could enhance their effectiveness in the future. However, concerns remain about the escalation of military technology and its impact on global security.
As tensions persist, experts hope that diplomatic solutions will take precedence over further military developments.
