“Russian Airstrikes Devastate Ukraine Amid Calls for Sanctions and Peace Talks”

Overnight air raids by Russian forces have left at least 14 people dead and dozens injured in Ukraine, intensifying the ongoing conflict just days before critical peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for increased sanctions against Russia in response to the attacks.

The strikes targeted the center of Dobropillia in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region late Friday, killing 11 people and wounding 30, including five children, according to emergency services. The assault caused significant damage to residential buildings and vehicles. Ukrainian officials reported that rescuers were deliberately targeted in a follow-up strike, a tactic described as “inhumane” by President Zelenskyy.

Separately, a drone attack in the Kharkiv region claimed three lives and injured seven others. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept a portion of the missiles and drones launched during the assault.

The air raids occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened new sanctions and tariffs on Russia, while suggesting that working with Moscow might be “easier” than Kyiv in efforts to end the three-year-long war. President Zelenskyy emphasized the need for stronger air defenses and international pressure to counter Russia’s aggression.

The attacks come ahead of scheduled talks between U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators in Saudi Arabia, aimed at securing a truce. President Zelenskyy is set to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, with further discussions planned with U.S. officials the following day. The international community watches closely as efforts to broker peace face mounting challenges.
