Russia Wants to Mediate in Iran-Israel Conflict, But Israel Shows No Interest

Russia is ready to mediate in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. However, Israel has shown no interest in any external mediation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov shared this information during a regular press briefing on Tuesday.Peskov said that Russia is prepared to play a mediating role to establish peace between Israel and Iran. But Israel is not interested in any form of external mediation.Since last Friday, Israel has launched attacks on various locations in Iran. Israel claims the purpose of the strikes is to destroy Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons. Iran, however, has denied these allegations. In retaliation, Iran has carried out counterattacks on various Israeli military and government installations.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists:> “President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is ready to act as a mediator in peace talks, if necessary.”He added:> “Currently, we are seeing a reluctance on the part of Israel toward any form of mediation. They are also not showing any interest in pursuing a peaceful resolution.”However, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Sunday that Russia is not currently a suitable mediator because of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.Iran has reported that at least 224 people have been killed and hundreds injured in Israeli military strikes over the past five days. Among the dead are military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians. Tehran has not updated the casualty figures since Sunday.On the other hand, Iran’s counterattacks have killed at least 24 people in Israel and injured hundreds more, according to figures released by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.In recent years, Russia has significantly strengthened its economic and military ties with Iran. At the same time, it has also maintained close relations with Israel. This dual relationship allows Moscow to propose playing a mediating role in the Iran-Israel conflict.
