U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he hopes Russia and Ukraine will reach an agreement to end the war this week. However, he did not mention under what conditions the agreement would be made or could be made.
On Monday (April 21), news agency Anadolu reported this information.
According to the agency, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Sunday (local time), stating that he wants both Russia and Ukraine to reach an understanding this week to end the ongoing war.
In a message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said, “If the two countries can reach a deal, they will be able to do big business with the United States — and earn huge profits from it! The United States is now on a path of progress.”
Since taking office in January this year, President Trump has ramped up diplomatic efforts to end the war. Washington has been in regular discussions with both Russia and Ukraine in an attempt to find a path to compromise.
Russia launched its aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, and the war has continued ever since. Recently, Trump said that Kyiv and Moscow need to be encouraged to reach a settlement. Following that, on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a brief ceasefire for Easter.
However, both countries have since accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
It is worth noting that since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the war has resulted in significant casualties and destruction on both sides, with no permanent peace agreement reached so far.
