Russia Launches Deadliest Strike on Kyiv in Months, Dozens Injured and Killed

Russia has carried out one of the most devastating attacks on Kyiv in recent months, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 100 in a large-scale missile and drone barrage. The assault flattened parts of a nine-storey apartment building and damaged dozens of other sites across the capital.Ukrainian officials initially reported 15 deaths in Kyiv, but later revised the toll to 10. Two additional fatalities occurred in Odesa after drone strikes hit the southern city.Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said Ukraine was targeted by 440 drones and 32 missiles in the overnight attack, which lasted over nine hours and caused widespread panic. Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed more than 40 apartments were destroyed and warned more people might be trapped under the rubble.Among the dead was a 62-year-old American citizen. Klitschko accused Russia of using cluster munitions filled with ball bearings to maximize civilian casualties.“This is one of the most terrifying strikes since the full-scale war began,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is currently attending the G7 summit in Canada. He called the attack “pure terrorism” and criticized global leaders for not doing enough to pressure Russia.Explosions rocked Kyiv from before midnight until after dawn, forcing thousands into bomb shelters. Rescue efforts continued into the afternoon, with emergency workers searching for survivors amid debris. The strike damaged 27 locations, including residential buildings, schools, and infrastructure facilities, according to Klymenko. Sirens repeatedly disrupted rescue operations throughout the day.Russia’s defense ministry claimed it successfully targeted Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and insisted all intended targets were hit. In contrast, Ukraine said the scale and method of the attacks aimed to overwhelm its air defenses and cause mass civilian harm.Meanwhile, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a missile strike on Russian-occupied Donetsk, injuring at least 10 people. Russian media also reported that 147 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight across nine Russian regions. In Odesa, drone attacks killed two people and wounded ten others, Ukrainian authorities said.Zelensky’s efforts to secure more support at the G7 summit suffered a setback as former U.S. President Donald Trump—whom Zelensky had hoped to meet—abruptly left the summit amid the escalating Middle East crisis.Despite this, the UK and its allies are expected to unveil new sanctions against Russia aimed at maintaining pressure on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
