Russell Crowe’s Cult Movie Now Streaming on Netflix

Russell Crowe’s cult horror film The Pope’s Exorcist is now available for streaming on Netflix.

Directed by Julius Avery, the 2023 film is inspired by the real-life story of Father Gabriele Amorth, a Catholic priest who is believed to have conducted over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican. Crowe stars as Father Amorth, who travels to Spain to confront a demonic possession at a fictional abbey.

If you missed the film in theaters or are simply looking for a rewatch, you can now stream it on Netflix in the UK and Ireland as of January 19.

Despite its popularity among horror fans, The Pope’s Exorcist received mixed reviews from critics, holding a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads: “The Pope’s Exorcist is standard-issue holy horror in most respects, but its star’s sanctified performance will be the answer to some viewers’ prayers.” However, the audience score is much more favorable, with a strong 80%.

Excitingly, a sequel to the film is already in the works. Producer Jeff Katz confirmed the news via social media, saying: “Amorth Nation – I just got the call. IT’S OFFICIALLY HAPPENING!!! Thank you to the amazing The Pope’s Exorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride.”

The film’s ending left room for a sequel, with Father Amorth in possession of a map leading to 199 other evil sites he recovered from the abbey. Fans can now look forward to the next chapter of this supernatural saga.
