‘Romy and Michele’ Sequel Officially Happening with Original Stars

The beloved ’90s cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially getting a sequel, much to the excitement of fans. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino, who starred as the iconic duo in the original film, are in final talks to reprise their roles and executive produce the follow-up.

The sequel, which has been a topic of conversation for years, is expected to begin production in Los Angeles this June. Tim Federle, known for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, will direct the new film, bringing fresh energy to the story.

While plot details remain under wraps, screenwriter Robin Schiff and producer Laurence Mark are returning in their original roles. Sorvino shared the news with her followers on Instagram, expressing her excitement by posting a screenshot of the article announcing the sequel and captioning it, “We’re pretty excited about it.”

Fans were treated to a nostalgic moment in 2022 when Kudrow and Sorvino briefly reunited at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, donning outfits inspired by their characters and paying homage to the film with Post-Its.

Sorvino previously reflected on the enduring appeal of Romy and Michele, saying the characters’ quirky, lovable friendship resonates with audiences: “We think we’re smart, but we’re really dumb and yet we love each other,” she noted. “We go through all these dumb things because of our wish to impress other people and then we realize that, you know, we’re enough in our love for each other, and our crazy style is enough.”

The sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is shaping up to be a much-anticipated return for fans of the original, with the duo’s iconic, hilarious bond back at the forefront. Stay tuned for more updates as production kicks off this summer!
