Report on the Appeal by the South Asia Democratic Forum Regarding the Ban on Bangladesh Awami League

Brussels, 12 May 2025 — The South Asia Democratic Forum (SADF) has issued a strong condemnation of the interim government of Bangladesh for its recent decision to ban all political activities of the Bangladesh Awami League under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009.

The move, announced on 10 May 2025, follows widespread protests and a controversial amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act. Authorities justified the ban as a measure to protect witnesses involved in a tribunal probing protester deaths during the 2024 uprising. However, critics, including SADF, argue the sweeping ban—extending to digital platforms—undermines civil liberties, suppresses opposition voices, and lacks judicial transparency.

“The blanket criminalisation of an entire political party without due process threatens the foundations of democracy in Bangladesh,” SADF stated.

SADF called on the government to immediately lift the ban, ensure fair legal proceedings, protect freedom of expression and association, and initiate inclusive political dialogue.

The forum emphasized that true justice cannot emerge through repression and urged Bangladesh to reaffirm its commitment to democratic principles.
