Quentin Tarantino has opened up about his extended absence from directing films, revealing that the real reason for his hiatus is to spend time raising his son, Leo, who was born in 2020.
The director, whose last film was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), shared during a Sundance Film Festival event that he’s in no rush to return to production. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years,” Tarantino explained. “I kinda want to not end up doing whatever movie I end up doing until my son is 6.”
This suggests that Tarantino’s next film may not arrive until next year at the earliest, as he prioritizes time with his young son. Despite the break, Tarantino teased that he has been working on a play, hinting that if the play becomes a success, it might influence his future filmmaking plans. “If that’s a smash hit, that might be my last movie,” he said.
In 2019, the director suggested that his next project would serve as an “epilogue” to his career, and he has since reflected on the potential for that project to be his final film. “I know film history and from here on in, directors do not get better,” he stated in a 2021 interview with Real Time with Bill Maher. “I’ve given it everything I have,” he added, acknowledging the longevity of his career.
Tarantino, famous for iconic films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained, is known for his unique style and prolific contributions to cinema. Fans now eagerly await what might be his final directorial project, whenever it arrives.
