Putin Praises Trump as ‘Courageous’ Following Election Win

Sochi, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Donald Trump on his recent election victory, referring to him as a “courageous man” in a speech in Sochi. Putin noted that Trump faced significant opposition during his first term and commended the former president’s resilience.

Putin also remarked on Trump’s promise to end the war in Ukraine, saying that the idea “deserves attention at least.” During his campaign, Trump claimed he could resolve the conflict “in a day” but has not provided details on his plan.

Putin Recalls Assassination Attempt on Trump

Putin referenced the July assassination attempt on Trump, describing how Trump, despite being injured, raised his fist and shouted “fight, fight, fight” before being taken away by the Secret Service. “He behaved very courageously, like a man,” Putin said.

Putin Open to Dialogue with Trump

When asked if he was open to discussions with Trump, Putin responded, “We’re ready, we’re ready.” Trump also indicated a willingness to talk, telling NBC News, “I think we’ll speak.”

European Concerns Over Trump’s Stance on Ukraine

Meanwhile, European leaders gathered in Budapest at the European Political Community summit to discuss Trump’s return to office. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a “very warm” and “productive conversation” with the president-elect but emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the U.S. and Europe to support Ukraine.

UK, Hungary Respond to Trump’s Return

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reassured Zelensky that Britain’s support for Ukraine would remain “iron-clad.” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Trump ally, hinted at upcoming trade challenges, particularly regarding Trump’s plan to impose a 10% tariff on imports. Orban suggested that Europe should prepare to take more responsibility for its own security.
