Poll Shows Majority of French Want Barnier’s Government to Fall Amid Budget Backlash

PARIS – A recent poll reveals that 53% of French citizens want Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government to collapse, citing widespread dissatisfaction with his proposed budget. The Ifop-Fiducial poll, conducted for Sud Radio and published on November 28, found that 67% of respondents opposed Barnier’s budget, which includes 60 billion euros in tax hikes and spending cuts aimed at reducing France’s growing public deficit.

The poll suggests that Barnier’s government could face a no-confidence motion, potentially leading to its fall before Christmas, as both far-right and left-wing opponents threaten to unite against the government.

In a separate Elabe poll for BFM TV, 63% of respondents said that President Emmanuel Macron should resign if Barnier’s government were to collapse. The Ifop-Fiducial survey was based on interviews with 1,006 people conducted on November 26 and 27.
