Pakistan has launched its own surveillance satellite. The satellite was launched on Friday (January 17) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northern China.
This information was reported by Pakistan’s media outlet Dawn.
The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan’s space research organization, oversaw the satellite. Named EO-1, this is Pakistan’s first domestically developed electro-optical satellite.
According to the report, such satellites use electro-optical sensors to detect and measure reflected sunlight or emitted radiation to collect data and images of the Earth’s surface.
In a statement, SUPARCO mentioned that the new satellite will enhance Pakistan’s capabilities. It will contribute to monitoring and managing natural resources, disaster response, and the agricultural sector. The satellite reflects Pakistan’s self-reliance and technological advancement in space exploration.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, stated in a statement, “SUPARCO is on the right path. This satellite highlights our country’s growing capabilities in space science and technology.” He also described the day as a moment of pride for Pakistan.
Earlier, in May of last year, Pakistan launched another satellite. That satellite, developed jointly by SUPARCO and China’s Great Wall Industry Corporation, aimed to improve communication systems.
