Olivia Hussey, the iconic actress best known for her portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (1968), has passed away at the age of 73. She died peacefully at her home last Friday, surrounded by loved ones, according to an Instagram post from her family.
The post read, “Olivia was an extraordinary person. Her warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched everyone she met throughout her life.”
Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Olivia’s father was an Argentine opera singer, and her mother was an English legal secretary. At the age of seven, she moved with her family to London, where she studied acting at the Conti Academy in Italy.
In addition to her legendary role as Juliet, Hussey made a significant impact with her portrayal of Mary in the 1977 TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth and as Mother Teresa in the 2003 film Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Her performance in the 1974 cult classic Black Christmas also remains unforgettable.
However, Romeo and Juliet is considered the pinnacle of her career, where, at just 15 years old, she delivered a mesmerizing performance opposite Leonard Whiting as Romeo. The film received critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination, and Hussey won the David di Donatello Award and a Golden Globe for her role.
