Nippon Steel President Considers Lawsuit Against US Government Over Blocked Acquisition

Tokyo, Japan – Nippon Steel President Tadashi Imai announced on January 6 that filing a lawsuit against the United States government is one of the “important options” being considered after US President Joe Biden blocked the company’s proposed purchase of US Steel. Nippon Television reported that Imai criticized the US government’s reviewing process and decisions regarding the acquisition proposal, stating that Nippon Steel is “entitled to a proper review.”

President Biden cited national security concerns for rejecting the US$14.9 billion bid on January 3 after a year-long review. Imai indicated that the company would soon announce countermeasures to the US government’s decision.
