Netflix Cancels The Sandman After Season 2

Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman will come to a close with its upcoming second season. After a long wait, Season 2 is set to release in 2025, and sources confirm it will be the final season of the series.

The first season of The Sandman debuted in August 2022, with a renewal announced in November of that year. Initially, Netflix was hesitant to label it as a “second season,” instead calling it a continuation of the The Sandman world. However, it has now been confirmed that the second season was always intended to wrap up the story of Dream, with the show focusing exclusively on his journey.

Showrunner Allan Heinberg shared in a statement, “We knew we only had enough story for one more season,” referencing the material left from the original comics. He also expressed gratitude toward Netflix for supporting the faithful adaptation of Gaiman’s work.

Season 2 will follow the “Season of Mists” storyline from Gaiman’s comics, where Lucifer Morningstar (Gwendoline Christie) abdicates control of Hell, leading Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) into a complex situation with many immortals vying for control of the key to Hell’s gates.

The new season will introduce several new characters, including Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, and Barry Sloane as “The Prodigal,” along with returning cast members like Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, and Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine.

Despite recent controversy surrounding Gaiman, including sexual misconduct allegations and his departure from other projects, the release of The Sandman Season 2 remains on track for 2025. Production on the series began in summer 2023, and fans can look forward to the conclusion of this captivating tale.

Netflix has yet to comment on the allegations against Gaiman.
