More than Half a Million People Homeless in Germany

According to Germany’s Ministry of Housing, Urban Development, and Building, 531,600 people in the country lack permanent housing. This information was revealed in the second Homelessness Report.

Among the homeless, 439,500 people were accommodated through emergency housing assistance systems, while 60,400 were staying with relatives, friends, or acquaintances.

The remaining homeless individuals are living on the streets or in temporary shelters. These figures were collected at the end of January last year.

The first report on homelessness was published in 2022, at which time the number of homeless people was 263,000. This means the figure has almost doubled since then. However, the ministry notes that data collection during the first report had certain limitations.

Additionally, the report published on Wednesday includes 136,000 Ukrainian refugees who are living in refugee accommodations due to a lack of alternatives. These Ukrainians arrived in Germany after the publication of the first report.

Housing, Urban Development, and Building Minister Klara Geywitz stated that the government is taking steps to address the homelessness issue. She also mentioned that the goal is to solve the problem by 2030.
