Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to deliver “unimaginable” punishment to those responsible for the recent deadly attack in Kashmir. Speaking at a public rally after inaugurating a development project in Bihar on Thursday (April 24), Modi began his speech with a two-minute silence to honor the victims. The statement was reported by British news agency Reuters.
Addressing a large crowd in Hindi, Modi said, “Let me be clear: those who carried out and planned this attack will receive punishment beyond imagination. We will chase them to the ends of the earth.”
This statement came two days after 26 Indian tourists were killed by suspected militants in Kashmir. Modi declared, “They will definitely be punished. The terrorists’ hideouts will be reduced to dust. The determination of 1.4 billion Indians will crush the backbone of these terrorists.”
In his first speech following Tuesday’s attack, Modi emphasized that India will identify, locate, and punish every terrorist and their sponsors. Concluding his speech, he addressed foreign audiences in English for a rare moment, saying, “Terrorism will not be spared. Every effort will be made to ensure justice.”
Indian security forces have launched a massive operation in Kashmir to track down the attackers, resulting in several arrests. The shooting took place in the popular tourist area of Pahalgam and has been termed the deadliest attack on civilians in the Muslim-majority disputed region since 2000. Among the victims were 26 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen.
Following the incident, India accused Islamabad of supporting “cross-border terrorism” and took several diplomatic steps that have further strained relations with neighboring Pakistan. However, Pakistan has denied any involvement in the Pahalgam attack.
