Military Must Not Interfere in Politics, Says Yunus’s Special Assistant Amid Calls for Inclusive but Controlled Transition

Dhaka, May 23, 2025 — “The military must not interfere in politics,” said Fayez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to interim Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in a strongly worded statement made Friday via his official Facebook page. Emphasizing the principles of democratic governance, he added, “In today’s world, the military of any civilized nation does not engage in politics.”

Tayyeb criticized the recent remarks by the Chief of Army Staff regarding holding elections by December, stating that the comment did not maintain “jurisdictional correctness.” While stressing that the army must be treated with due respect and confidence, he warned against any rash or irresponsible moves involving the armed forces. “The Bangladesh Army is our pride and a symbol of national trust—that must not be undermined,” he said.

He also issued a caution against the return of the Awami League under the guise of inclusiveness. “Rehabilitation of the Awami League in the name of inclusiveness is unacceptable,” he asserted.

On the upcoming national election, Tayyeb expressed confidence that it would be held between April and May 2025. “All necessary reforms must be completed within this period, along with implementation of the July Charter,” he said, referring to the roadmap for political transition following the July 2024 uprising.

He further noted that the nation plans to celebrate the first anniversary of the July Uprising throughout July and August, culminating in what he hopes will be the first verdict in the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the end of August. “We hope the first ruling in the trial of the autocratic killer Hasina will be delivered by August,” he stated.

Ending on a defiant note, he said, “Inshallah, we will not be defeated. We cannot be defeated. Long live the revolution. Long live Professor Yunus. Long live Bangladesh.”
