Michael Jackson Biopic May Be Split Into Two Movies, Release Delayed

Antoine Fuqua’s highly anticipated Michael biopic about pop legend Michael Jackson may now be released as two separate films, potentially delaying its original release date of October 3, 2025.

The $155 million Lionsgate and Universal Pictures project wrapped filming in May 2024, but the script — written by John Logan — is currently undergoing revisions ahead of planned reshoots. No new footage was shown at this year’s CinemaCon, fueling speculation about changes behind the scenes.

Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, stars in the title role, making his acting debut. The star-studded cast includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as attorney John Branca, and Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy. Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Jessica Sula, and Kendrick Sampson also appear, portraying iconic figures like Suzanne de Passe, Diana Ross, La Toya Jackson, and Quincy Jones.

Domingo, who plays the controversial Jackson family patriarch, said he aimed to portray Joe Jackson as a complex and fully realized person: “It was about really building a very complex, complete human being with a soul.”

With reshoots and script adjustments underway, fans may have to wait a bit longer to see Michael on the big screen — possibly in two parts.
