The Voice News:Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has held a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara. The meeting took place on Saturday (May 24) in Turkey’s capital, Istanbul. British news agency Reuters reported the news citing CNN Türk.
Televised footage showed Erdoğan welcoming Al-Shara with a handshake as he stepped out of a car at the Dolmabahçe Palace, located on the shores of the Bosphorus Strait.
Recently, the Trump administration in the United States announced that sanctions on Syria had effectively been lifted. Trump had earlier pledged assistance in Syria’s reconstruction following its devastating civil war. In this context, Al-Shara traveled to Turkey for the meeting.
According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the meeting on Saturday was also attended by the foreign ministers of Syria and Turkey, the Turkish defense minister, and the head of Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT.
Syrian news agency SANA reported that Syria’s Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Kasra was present alongside President Al-Shara in the meeting.
