Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, shot a second consecutive 65 to secure a one-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the PGA Tour’s season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The prestigious event features 31 PGA Tour winners and 29 players who ranked within the FedEx Cup’s top 50 last year. Matsuyama, 32, made eight birdies during his round at Kapalua, edging out Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion.

Morikawa, the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 Open Championship winner, also carded a 65, highlighted by five consecutive birdies from the 13th hole. However, he missed an opportunity to tie Matsuyama, settling for par on the 18th.

“I’m definitely satisfied with where I am,” Matsuyama said. “The views here are stunning, and I haven’t played well at this course for some time, so it’s nice to start strong.”

Morikawa reflected on his performance, saying, “I hit some great shots and created plenty of birdie chances. It felt great to see some of them drop, especially on the back nine.”

Maverick McNealy matched the day’s lowest score with a 64, joining Corey Conners of Canada, Belgium’s Thomas Detry, and first-round leader Tom Hoge at 14 under, just two strokes off the lead.

England’s Harry Hall surged with birdies on four of his last five holes, recording a 65 that placed him in a group at 13 under, alongside Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and former US Open champion Wyndham Clark, both of whom shot 64s.
