Malaysia and China’s Relationship Goes Beyond Trade, Emphasizes PM Anwar Ibrahim

In a recent speech at the Chinese New Year Global Launching event held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the multifaceted relationship between Malaysia and China, asserting that their friendship extends beyond mere trade and investment.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity and Civilisation

During his address, Anwar stressed the significance of cultural diversity and the deep respect for civilisation as foundational aspects of the bilateral relationship between the two nations. He shared insights from his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, indicating a mutual commitment to these values. “Respecting cultural diversity and honouring the true meaning of civilisation is equally important as economic or political engagements,” Anwar stated.

Inclusivity at the Forefront

The event, which marked the first time the Chinese New Year Global Launching was held outside China, symbolizes Malaysia’s policy of inclusivity and its role as a host that values cultural celebrations. Anwar emphasized that such events not only signify Malaysia’s openness but also its readiness to welcome international friends and strengthen global ties.

Malaysian Policies on Cultural Appreciation

Anwar touched on the importance of embracing and appreciating other cultures within Malaysia, a practice he believes enhances the nation’s survivability and global relationships. “Appreciating other cultures might be alien to some of us, but this phenomenon could be meaningful, not only to our survival, but it also signifies our readiness to welcome our friends from overseas,” he explained.

A Vision for the Future

Reflecting on a quote from the Song Dynasty, Anwar conveyed a message of moving beyond past uncertainties towards a future of thriving partnerships and shared objectives with China. This sentiment was well-received by the attendees, which included notable figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, and several high-ranking Chinese officials.

Broadening the Scope of Bilateral Ties

The Chinese New Year celebration in Kuala Lumpur not only underscores the cultural bonds between Malaysia and China but also serves as a reminder of the broader scope of their relationship. As both countries navigate future challenges and opportunities, the emphasis on cultural and civilisational respect will likely continue to define their collaborative efforts.

In conclusion, PM Anwar Ibrahim’s remarks underscore a comprehensive approach to international relations, one that embraces cultural diversity and mutual respect as essential elements of diplomacy and friendship. This event marks a significant moment in Malaysia’s cultural calendar, reinforcing its role as a multicultural and inclusive society.
