Kharkiv Endures Most Intense Russian Assault Since Invasion Began

On June 7, 2025, the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv experienced its most devastating attack since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Russian forces launched a massive aerial assault involving 206 drones and nine missiles across Ukraine, with Kharkiv bearing the brunt. The strike resulted in at least three fatalities and 22 injuries, including a one-month-old baby and a 14-year-old girl. Over 30 residential buildings, including high-rise apartments, were damaged or destroyed.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov described the attack as the most powerful since the war began, emphasizing the extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. The city’s emergency services responded swiftly, but the scale of destruction has overwhelmed local resources.

This assault is widely viewed as a retaliatory response to Ukraine’s recent “Operation Spiderweb,” a strategic drone campaign that reportedly damaged or destroyed approximately 40 Russian military aircraft, including strategic bombers.

The international community has condemned the attack, with calls for increased support to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and protect civilian populations. As the conflict continues to escalate, the humanitarian situation in Kharkiv and other affected regions remains dire.
