Keanu Reeves has officially shut down any hopes of a John Wick return, confirming that the character’s story ended with his death in John Wick: Chapter 4. The actor, who portrayed the dog-loving assassin across four films, recently told Extra that fans shouldn’t expect a resurrection for the iconic character.
“The character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4,” Reeves said, adding with a laugh, “I know, in Hollywood you can… I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t [any plans].”
While some may have hoped for a posthumous return in future John Wick films, Reeves made it clear that there would be no fake-out death or timeline manipulation to bring John Wick back to life. However, there is a notable exception: the upcoming Ballerina spin-off, which takes place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Reeves confirmed that he will reprise his role as John Wick for a brief appearance in the movie.
“There’s a version of it called Ballerina, which is in the John Wick world, and John Wick makes a brief appearance,” Reeves explained.
Despite fan speculation and rumors of a John Wick 5, director Chad Stahelski has also stated that the fourth film was intended to provide closure for the character. “The honest truth is you don’t [top John Wick: Chapter 4]. You simply don’t,” Stahelski said, emphasizing that any potential fifth installment would not continue the storyline of Chapter 4. Instead, he described the development of John Wick 5 as more of an “exercise” than something actively in the works.
Fans of the franchise can look forward to Ballerina, but as for more John Wick films, it seems that the saga’s central character has met his final chapter.
