Karla Sofía Gascón Returns to Red Carpet After Controversy

Karla Sofía Gascón, the Oscar-nominated star of Emilia Pérez, made her first red carpet appearance since a controversy surrounding her resurfaced tweets at the 2025 César Awards in France. Gascón, who is the first openly trans woman to be nominated for Best Actress, did not speak to the press during her appearance but expressed gratitude for her return to the spotlight.

“I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m grateful to be back,” Gascón shared with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of her expected appearance at the 2025 Oscars. “I’m grateful to all those who’ve believed in me… We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”

Gascón has kept a low profile following the resurfacing of controversial comments she made in older tweets, which involved disparaging remarks about Black people, immigrants, and Islam. In response, Gascón has issued multiple apologies, explaining that her actions were taken out of context and clarifying that she has always supported minorities and fought against racism, homophobia, and religious intolerance.

Despite the backlash, Gascón remains a key figure in the Oscar race, with Emilia Pérez leading all films this year with 13 nominations. However, the film’s chances have been overshadowed by the scandal surrounding its lead actress.

Gascón plans to attend the upcoming Oscars, where she has been nominated for Best Actress.
