Journalists Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa have been released on parole for four hours from the Kashimpur Central Jail Complex in Gazipur. They were released from prison today, Wednesday, at around 6:30 PM.
Ananda Kumar Shil, Deputy Jail Superintendent of the Kashimpur Central High-Security Prison, confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo. He stated that Farzana Rupa is being held at the Kashimpur Women’s Prison, while Shakil Ahmed is in the high-security prison.
According to prison authorities, journalist Farzana Rupa’s mother passed away. Following her mother’s death, the family applied for parole to the District Magistrate of Dhaka. Based on this application, it was decided to grant parole for four hours to both Farzana Rupa and her husband Shakil Ahmed.
Shakil Ahmed was working as the Head of News and Farzana Rupa as the Chief Reporter at Ekattor Television. They were both removed from their positions on August 8. On August 21, police arrested them from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. They were later shown arrested in a murder case filed over the death of a man named Fazlul Karim during an anti-discrimination student movement in Uttara, Dhaka. After their arrest, they were sent to jail.
