Joint Military Exercise by the United States and the Philippines in South China Sea

The United States and the Philippines have conducted their fifth joint military exercise in the South China Sea, according to the Armed Forces of Manila.

However, this military exercise may escalate tensions with China in the region.

In a statement, the Philippine Army mentioned that the two countries conducted the joint military drill on Friday and Saturday. While this is the first such exercise this year, it marks the fifth since the initiative began in 2023.

Under the leadership of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., security cooperation between the two allies has increased due to his strong ties with Washington. The United States also has permission to use Philippine military bases.

The military exercise involved the United States’ Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, two guided missile destroyers, two helicopters, and two F-18 Hornet fighter jets.

Additionally, the Philippines deployed the Antonio Luna frigate, Andres Bonifacio patrol ship, two FA-50 fighter jets, and search and rescue assets from the Air Force.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines stated that this drill has strengthened bilateral maritime cooperation.
