Jim Carrey Willing to Return for ‘The Mask’ Sequel

Jim Carrey has expressed interest in reprising his iconic role from The Mask (1994), but only if the sequel has the right concept. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Carrey explained that while money isn’t his main motivation, he would be open to returning as Stanley Ipkiss, the mild-mannered banker who transforms into a wild and chaotic superhero when he wears a magical mask.

He said, “It would have to be the right concept. It’s not about the money… I joke about it, but I never know. You can’t really be sure about these things. I said I wanted to retire, but I think I meant more like a power-resting. Because when the right opportunity comes, or the chance to work with a great team, things change.”

The Mask remains one of Carrey’s most iconic films, alongside Cameron Diaz and Peter Riegert. It was a major hit, showcasing Carrey’s signature over-the-top comedic style.

Beyond The Mask, Carrey has also recently considered revisiting other beloved roles. He spoke about the possibility of returning as the Grinch in a How the Grinch Stole Christmas sequel, although he acknowledged that the process of wearing the Grinch costume was physically exhausting.

Additionally, Carrey will appear again as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, set for release on December 20. Reflecting on his return to the Sonic franchise, Carrey humorously remarked, “I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch… and I bought a lot of stuff, so I need the money, frankly.”

While Carrey has stepped back from Hollywood in recent years, his willingness to return to certain projects shows his openness to unique, creative opportunities. Fans of The Mask are hopeful that the right idea will bring Carrey back to the role that made him a global comedy star.
