India Urges Bangladesh to Protect Minorities Amid Rising Violence Against Hindus
New Delhi – India called on Bangladesh’s interim government on Friday to take responsibility for safeguarding its minority communities, expressing concern over increasing incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected claims that such incidents were merely “media exaggeration” and emphasized the need for action.
In a written response in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that India’s High Commission in Dhaka was closely monitoring the situation. He reiterated that the safety of minorities in Bangladesh remains the responsibility of its government.
“Our position is clear: the interim government in Dhaka must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities. We are deeply concerned about the rise in extremist rhetoric, increasing violence, and provocations. These developments cannot simply be dismissed as media exaggerations,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
The MEA also addressed the arrest of religious leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges, calling for a “fair, just, and transparent legal process.” Das, previously associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), has faced criticism amid calls in Dhaka for a ban on the globally recognized organization.
“ISKCON is a globally well-regarded organization with a strong record of social service,” Jaiswal added. India expressed its expectations that legal proceedings against Das and others would respect their rights and adhere to due process.
In the Lok Sabha, Jaishankar highlighted reports of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, including attacks on homes, businesses, temples, and other religious sites as recently as August 2024. India urged Bangladesh to take swift action to curb extremist rhetoric and ensure the protection of all its citizens.
This statement comes amid rising tensions between the two neighbors, with India taking a firm stance on minority rights and urging Dhaka to fulfill its commitments.
