Is ‘Barbie’ Making a Comeback?

After Barbie became a global sensation, grossing over $1.4 billion at the box office, the inevitable question arose: Will there be a sequel? According to reports, director Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach are now working on a story for Barbie 2 and have already pitched their idea to Warner Bros. While it’s still in the early stages, sources confirm that the duo is eager to bring a sequel to life, but only if they find the right story.

Gerwig has been vocal about the importance of a meaningful narrative and has stated that she will only proceed with the sequel if she finds a story that truly resonates. “My North Star is, what do I deeply love? What’s the story underneath this story?” Gerwig said in a recent interview. This careful approach reflects her commitment to crafting a thoughtful and engaging follow-up to the hugely successful original.

Though the details of the sequel are still under wraps, the team is already moving forward with plans. Margot Robbie, who starred as Barbie and produced the first film, has spoken highly of Gerwig’s vision, praising her unique approach and the humanity she brought to the film. With Barbie receiving several Oscar nominations and critical acclaim, including Best Picture and Best Original Song, the success of the first film has only fueled anticipation for the sequel.

While Gerwig and Baumbach are both busy with other projects — Gerwig is working on a Chronicles of Narnia adaptation, and Baumbach is completing post-production on his next film — their partnership and creative process continue to evolve. Gerwig and Baumbach typically work separately on scripts and share drafts, a method they’ve used for previous collaborations like Mistress America and Frances Ha.

As for the sequel’s plot, nothing has been confirmed, but with Gerwig’s careful approach to storytelling, fans can expect a thoughtful continuation of the Barbie universe that stays true to the original’s success. With the world eagerly waiting, it’s not a matter of if the sequel will happen, but when.
