Iran Preparing to Target U.S. Bases in the Middle East: The New York

TimesIran is reportedly preparing to launch attacks on U.S. military bases located across the Middle East. The country is mobilizing missiles and other military equipment in anticipation of potential strikes.According to a report published Wednesday (June 18) by The New York Times, U.S. intelligence officials have revealed that Iran is readying its arsenal to target American bases in the region. This military buildup comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, with the possibility of U.S. involvement increasing tensions. The report states that the United States has deployed nearly three dozen fuel-supply aircraft to Europe. These could be used to extend the range of fighter jets protecting American bases or bombers potentially tasked with striking Iranian nuclear sites.U.S. officials fear that if Israel formally requests White House intervention in the conflict, the region could spiral into a broader war. If the U.S. joins any assault on Iran’s critical Fordow nuclear facility, Iran-backed Houthi rebels may resume their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. Additionally, Iran-aligned militias in Iraq and Syria could attempt strikes on U.S. installations. Some officials have also warned that Iran may begin laying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz—possibly aiming to trap U.S. warships within the Persian Gulf. The report adds that U.S. bases in the UAE, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert. Currently, over 40,000 American troops are stationed across various Middle Eastern countries. Two Iranian officials stated that if the U.S. enters the conflict on Israel’s side, Iran will initially strike American bases in Iraq. Any Arab country hosting U.S. bases that participate in such action will also become a target. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that military force cannot be used to impose foreign will on Iran. Speaking with his European counterparts over the phone, he declared that if war spreads, Israel and its primary backers will be held responsible.U.S. officials acknowledged that American bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE are all within missile range. As Israel’s attacks continue and Iran responds with missile strikes, the likelihood of direct U.S. involvement in the war is rising.
