Iran never planned to assassinate Trump: Pezeshkian

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian says his country never planned to assassinate US President-elect and Republican leader Donald Trump. In an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, he rejected the allegations made by Trump and the US government.

In November last year, the US Justice Department charged an Iranian citizen with attempted assassination of Trump. According to the complaint, the attempt to assassinate Trump was carried out at the behest of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. However, law enforcers foiled the plan before any attack could be launched.

During the US election campaign last year, Trump also alleged that Iran may have been behind the assassination attempt on him.

Yesterday, NBC News asked Pezeshkian if Iran had a plan to assassinate Trump. “Never,” Pezeshkian replied. ’

Trump won the US presidential election in November last year. He will officially take office as president on Monday. Trump survived two assassination attempts during the campaign. There was an assassination attempt in September last year. Trump was playing golf on a golf course he owns in West Palm Beach, Florida. In July last year, there was an attempt to assassinate Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Investigators found that there was no evidence of Iranian involvement in either of the two incidents.
Tehran has previously denied allegations that Iran is interfering in the internal affairs of the United States in various ways, including cyber operations.

Iran says the US has interfered in its internal affairs for decades. They also cited several incidents to prove the allegation. These include events ranging from the coup against Iran’s prime minister in 1953 to the killing of Iranian military commanders in a US drone strike in 2020.
