‘Insulting religion’: Sunamganj Hindu house attacked, youth held

Asked how many houses were attacked, OC Jahidul Haque said, “It was not counted. The incident happened due to a post on Facebook. ”

A group of miscreants allegedly vandalised and looted over 100 houses of the Hindu community in a village in Dowarabazar upazila of Sunamganj over a Facebook post accusing them of insulting religion.

The incident took place at Monglargaon village under Sadar union of the upazila on Tuesday night, said Jahidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dowarabazar Police Station.

Police arrested Akash Das, 20, son of Prafulla Das of Manglargaon village in this connection. Some people in the area have accused him of commenting on another person’s Facebook post insulting religion. 

Mohammad Elias Mia, deputy commissioner of Sunamganj district, said the situation in the village was calm. The whole thing is under the supervision of the administration. ”

He urged all to remain calm and said that no one should take the law into their own hands.

Dowarabazar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Meher Nigar Tonu said, “The situation is calm now. Police and army personnel are on patrol. The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police visited the spot. 

“The mob went to the house of the young man and there was some vandalism. However, no temple was destroyed. Some houses and shops were vandalized. I’ll go back in the morning and see everything. ”

Monglargaon is the village on the other side of the Surma river and Dholpushi is the village on the other side. Two residents of Dholpushhi village said at night that they came to know about the attack and looting of Hindu houses and shops in Monglargaon village from their relatives. Many have fled their homes. There is panic in the area.

They said that after the evening, some angry people from some nearby villages took out a procession and demanded punishment of Akash. At that time, a section of the agitated people attacked some houses and shops, vandalized and looted. 

Asked how many houses were attacked, OC Jahidul said, “It was not counted. The incident happened due to a post on Facebook. Since religious sentiments were hurt, the mob went to the house of the youth. ”

“Legal proceedings are underway against the arrested youth. The situation is calm now. ”

As part of the continuous atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, the number of attacks is increasing every day. According to experts and well-wishers, Bangladesh is moving towards ethnic cleansing of the ongoing continuous attacks on Hindus. It is the culture of impunity against these series of attacks that are encouraging the attackers to commit crimes and every day in every nook and corner of Bangladesh, the destruction of Hindus is increasing continuously.
