India’s Test Cricket Future in Doubt After Series Losses; Focus on Kohli and Sharma’s Roles

India’s Test cricket team is facing a crisis following a series of defeats, with the spotlight firmly on veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The team has suffered six losses in their last eight Test matches, raising serious questions about the leadership and batting lineup’s effectiveness, particularly in the longest format of the game.
The recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia ended in a disappointing 1-3 defeat for India, a series where Kohli and Sharma, two of the country’s cricketing stalwarts, failed to make significant impacts with the bat. Kohli, once known for his formidable presence in Test cricket, managed only 190 runs across nine innings, with a solitary century in the opening match. Sharma, on the other hand, had an even more challenging series, amassing just 31 runs in three Tests before opting out of the final game to make way for a newcomer.
This poor performance has led to intense scrutiny over both players’ roles in the team moving forward. Kohli, who has been a dominant force in cricket for over a decade, appears to be struggling against deliveries outside the off-stump, a weakness that Australian bowlers exploited repeatedly. Sharma, after a successful stint as an opener and then middle-order batsman, seems to be grappling with finding his ideal batting position in Test cricket.
The conversation around the future of Indian Test cricket is now focusing on the need for a rebuild, with younger players like Yashasvi Jaiswal stepping up. Jaiswal, who was India’s top scorer in the Australian series, has shown promise with his technique and temperament, potentially signaling a shift towards a new era in Indian cricket.
Critics and former players, including legends like Sunil Gavaskar, have pointed out that while Kohli and Sharma have been instrumental in India’s past successes, their current form and the team’s recent results might necessitate a reevaluation. Gavaskar has specifically criticized Kohli for his on-field antics, suggesting they might pressure teammates unnecessarily.
Amid these discussions, there’s speculation about Kohli potentially playing county cricket in England to regain his form before the next Test series. Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly set to review the team’s performance, with decisions on leadership roles and team composition looming.
As India looks to regroup and redefine its Test cricket strategy, the focus will be on how to balance experience with the emergence of new talent, ensuring the team remains competitive on the world stage. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether Kohli and Sharma will continue to be central figures in India’s Test setup or if a new generation will take the reins.
