India-Pakistan Border Tensions Escalate Amid Continued Ceasefire Violations

India-Pakistan Border Tensions Escalate Amid Continued Ceasefire Violations
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), May 5 – The Indian Army has responded to unprovoked small arms firing by the Pakistan Army across the Line of Control (LoC) during the intervening night of May 4 and 5, officials confirmed on Monday. The firing targeted multiple areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir.
Indian Army’s Retaliation
According to defence sources, the Indian Army responded promptly and proportionately to the Pakistani aggression. This marks the eleventh consecutive day of India’s effective retaliation since Pakistan began its unprovoked firing on the night of April 25-26.
India Closes Airspace to Pakistani Aircraft
In a significant move, India closed its airspace to all Pakistani-registered, operated, or leased aircraft, including military flights, starting April 30. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) confirming the closure, which is expected to last until May 23.
Diplomatic Exchanges and Warnings
On April 29, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan held a hotline conversation to discuss the ceasefire violations. Indian officials reportedly warned Pakistan against its continued unprovoked firing along the LoC and International Border.
Background: Pahalgam Terror Attack
The latest escalation follows the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people. In response, India has taken several strategic measures, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and imposing economic and diplomatic restrictions on Pakistan.
As tensions continue to rise, both nations remain on high alert, with international observers closely monitoring the situation.
