Iran-backed Yemeni armed group, the Houthis, launched a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Israel. The group stated that they carried out the attack on Israel’s Nevatim Airbase.
According to reports, the missile was not intercepted by Israel’s defense systems, the Iran-backed group claimed. This information was reported by Anadolu Agency on Saturday, April 26.
The agency said that the Houthi group announced they had launched a “Palestine-2” hypersonic ballistic missile at Israel’s Nevatim Airbase. In a televised statement, the Houthis’ military spokesperson Yahya Saree made this announcement.
He stated that the missile successfully struck its target and that Israel’s defense systems failed to intercept it.
However, earlier, the Israeli military had claimed that they intercepted a missile launched from Yemen before it could enter Israeli airspace. During the incident, sirens sounded in several areas.
Since November 2023, the Houthi group has been targeting ships traveling through the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. They have stated that their attacks are acts of solidarity with Palestinians following Israeli assaults on Gaza.
It is notable that since October 2023, more than 51,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Earlier this year, in January, the Houthis had paused their attacks following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. However, after Israel recently resumed airstrikes on Gaza, the Houthis have restarted their attacks as well.
