Grammy-Nominated R&B Singer Angie Stone Dies in Car Crash

Angie Stone, the Grammy-nominated R&B singer known for hits like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and co-founding the hip-hop trio The Sequence, tragically passed away on March 1, 2025, in a car crash involving an 18-wheeler. She was 63 years old.

Her daughter, Ladi Diamond, confirmed the devastating news on Facebook, writing, “My mommy is gone.”

Born Angela Laverne Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone began her musical career in the late 1970s as part of The Sequence. The trio, often recognized as one of the first female hip-hop groups, made a lasting impact with their 1979 hit “Funk You Up.”

In the 1990s, Stone transitioned into R&B, first with the group Vertical Hold, and then as a solo artist. Her debut solo album, Black Diamond, released in 1999, featured the hit single “No More Rain (In This Cloud).” In 2001, she followed up with Mahogany Soul, which included the chart-topping track “Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”

Stone was also a renowned songwriter, working with artists such as D’Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Lenny Kravitz. Her musical achievements earned her three Grammy nominations, including Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 2003, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2004.

Apart from her music career, Stone appeared in films like The Hot Chick and The Fighting Temptations and made her Broadway debut in 2003’s Chicago. She also appeared in reality TV shows like Celebrity Fit Club and R&B Divas: Atlanta.

Stone’s legacy includes 10 solo albums, and she was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame last year. She is survived by her daughter Ladi, son Michael, two grandchildren, and countless fans who mourn her loss.
