German Chancellor Gifts Trump His Grandfather’s Birth Certificate, Urges U.S. to Lead Push to End Ukraine War

Merz calls Trump “key to ending Ukraine war” during a meeting marked by history, diplomacy, and tough talk on Russia.

Washington, D.C. | The Voice — In a symbolic and warmly received gesture, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented former U.S. President Donald Trump with the birth certificate of Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, during a high-profile meeting in Washington on Friday.

The certificate, dating back to 1869, commemorates the birth of Friedrich Trump in Kallstadt, Germany — the ancestral village of the Trump family. The two leaders shook hands, exchanged smiles, and traded compliments during the presentation.

Chancellor Merz extended a clear message of friendship and cooperation to the United States. “We owe the Americans a lot. We will never forget about that,” he said, emphasizing Germany’s gratitude and the importance of the transatlantic partnership.

Focus on Ukraine War

Turning to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Merz appealed for closer U.S.-EU cooperation to seek an end to the conflict.

“We are all looking for instruments to bring this war to an end. America is in a very strong position to do something. Let’s talk about what we can do jointly,” the Chancellor stated. “We are ready to do what we can. As you know, we (the EU) are looking for more pressure for Russia.”

Merz was clear in his assessment of President Trump’s potential influence on global affairs: “Trump is the key person in the world who can stop this war, by putting pressure on Russia.”

The Chancellor also drew a stark moral line between the two warring sides: “Ukraine is only targeting military targets, and not civilians,” Merz said — seeking to reinforce European backing for Kyiv in the face of growing international debate over the conduct and consequences of the war.

Renewed U.S.-German Relations?

The meeting, which combined personal symbolism with strategic urgency, signals a renewed German willingness to engage with the United States — particularly under the expectation of Trump returning to a dominant role in global politics.

With the EU searching for stronger leadership in shaping a path to peace in Ukraine, Merz’s visit and statements suggest that Berlin is now looking to Washington — and to Trump personally — to play a decisive role in diplomatic efforts moving forward.
