George Clooney is closing the chapter on romantic films. In an interview with 60 Minutes, the 63-year-old actor revealed that he will no longer star in romantic movies, acknowledging that he’s not looking to compete with younger leading men.
Clooney’s last romantic-comedy appearance was in the 2022 film Ticket to Paradise, which also starred Julia Roberts and grossed $168 million worldwide. Reflecting on his decision, Clooney shared, “Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore.”
Once considered a heartthrob during his “Sexiest Man of the Year” phase in the early 2000s, Clooney noted that this period was a high point of his career but emphasized that it’s now behind him. Throughout his career, Clooney starred in romantic films such as 1996’s One Fine Day with Michelle Pfeiffer and 2003’s Intolerable Cruelty with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Clooney’s comments come as Roberts also shared that she had turned down romantic film roles for two decades due to poor scripts. In Ticket to Paradise, however, Roberts found a script she felt was worthy of a return to the genre.
While Clooney has moved on from romantic comedies, his latest role on Broadway in Good Night, and Good Luck signals a new direction in his career.
