The holy month of Ramadan began on Friday in the besieged Gaza Strip. Residents prepared for the first Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) of Ramadan, but due to cold weather and rain, many were unable to eat properly.
According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Saturday, the first night of Ramadan was filled with hardship. As people were getting ready for Suhoor, rain disrupted their preparations. Water accumulated in temporary tents, soaking personal belongings. Those who left their tents to escape the water had nowhere else to go, causing immense suffering, especially for women and children.
People who returned to their damaged homes also faced difficulties. Rainwater entered through broken walls and ceilings, making the night even more challenging.
A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reached on January 19, with promises of allowing thousands of temporary homes into Gaza. However, Israel did not fulfill this promise, forcing many to continue living in makeshift tents that flood even with slight rain.
While the ceasefire halted the Israeli offensive in Gaza, ordinary people’s hardships have not ended. Despite their limited resources, Gazans tried to welcome the holy month of Ramadan, but the rain added to their troubles. Additionally, due to the ongoing blockade by Israel, many residents do not have access to sufficient food.
