The Voice News: Fresh violence has erupted once again in Manipur, a northeastern state of India. Following the arrest of five leaders of the hardline Meitei group Arambai Tenggol, authorities have imposed curfews in several areas and suspended internet services across the state, according to a report by British news outlet BBC.
On Sunday, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested five members of the group—including its chief Asem Konen Singh—from Imphal Airport. They have been accused of various crimes linked to the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur in 2023.
The arrests triggered widespread protests in the state capital, Imphal. Demonstrators attacked a police outpost, set buses on fire, and blocked major roads. Hindustan Times reports that security forces responded by firing tear gas and live rounds, injuring a 13-year-old boy.
Since 2023, recurring clashes have taken place between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, mainly over land rights and political influence. The violence has so far claimed the lives of at least 250 people and displaced thousands.
The latest unrest began on June 7, when the CBI transferred the arrested individuals to Guwahati, Assam. The agency stated that due to the fragile law and order situation in Manipur, the trials had been shifted to Assam.
In response to the escalating situation, the government has suspended internet and mobile data services for five days in five districts and imposed an indefinite curfew in one district. Restrictions on gatherings of four or more people have also been enforced in certain areas.
Meanwhile, Arambai Tenggol has called for a spontaneous 10-day strike in parts of the state starting Saturday night.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi took to X (formerly Twitter), stating that it is the Prime Minister’s responsibility to ensure peace and security for the citizens of Manipur. She directly blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that he has neither visited Manipur nor met with representatives since the violence began.
In February this year, amid growing criticism, the central government brought Manipur under direct rule and the then-Chief Minister resigned.
On Sunday, a multi-party delegation of lawmakers met with the state’s governor. BJP legislator Kh Ibomcha stated that they have requested the release of the arrested leaders after proper interrogation.
