ISLAMABAD – A Pakistani court on Thursday indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan on charges of inciting attacks against the military and its installations during protests in 2023, according to local media reports from Geo TV and ARY News.
Khan, who remains jailed, pleaded not guilty to the charges. More than 60 others were also indicted in the case, which stems from violent demonstrations on May 9, 2023, following Khan’s arrest on graft allegations.
Violence and Fallout
Thousands of Khan’s supporters reportedly attacked and torched military buildings and offices during the protests, leaving at least eight people dead. The unrest is considered one of the most serious challenges to the Pakistani military’s authority in the nation’s history.
Khan, 72, now faces anti-terrorism charges related to the violence. Several of his supporters have already been convicted and sentenced.
Mounting Legal Battles
The cricketer-turned-politician has been implicated in dozens of legal cases since leaving office in 2022. He has been in custody for over a year, facing an array of charges that include corruption and incitement of violence.
The indictments mark a significant escalation in the legal and political turmoil surrounding Khan’s tenure and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
