Former Ecuadorian VP Jorge Glas Evacuated from Prison After Assassination Attempt

Guayaquil, Ecuador – Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas has been evacuated from La Roca prison following an attempt on his life, his lawyer Sonia Gabriela Vera announced on Sunday. Vera blamed the government for the situation and called for intervention from the United Nations and other international organizations.

Vera described the attack as an “attempted assassination” and claimed it was the result of a state that has condemned Glas to danger, torture, and slow death. She warned that any harm to Glas would be a crime of the state.

Glas was detained in April after Ecuadorean security forces stormed Mexico’s embassy in Quito, where he had sought asylum. While his supporters argue that the arrest is politically motivated, Glas has been convicted of corruption on two other occasions and faces charges of misusing funds collected for reconstruction after a 2016 earthquake.

Ecuador’s SNAI prisons agency has not yet responded to requests for comment.
