Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic The Odyssey has just revealed its first look at Matt Damon in the lead role, and fans of both the filmmaker and the actor are already buzzing with excitement.
Following the massive success of Oppenheimer, Nolan and Damon have teamed up once again for this epic reimagining of Homer’s timeless 8th-century poem. The film will follow the legendary journey of Odysseus, played by Damon, as he embarks on a decade-long voyage to return home to Ithaca and reunite with his wife, Penelope, after the Trojan War.
In the newly released first-look image, Damon dons an iconic helmet adorned with bristles, showcasing a powerful image of the ancient Greek hero. His ensemble includes an upper body armor vest, a bracer on his forearm, and a cape, while he gazes over his shoulder, embodying the strength and determination of Odysseus as he begins his journey.
Set for a July 2026 release, The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, and more. While only Damon’s role as Odysseus has been confirmed so far, there is plenty of speculation about the rest of the cast. It’s rumored that Holland could portray Odysseus’ son, Telemachus, while Hathaway might take on the role of Penelope, but for now, all of this remains speculative.
Much like Oppenheimer, The Odyssey will be shot in IMAX, utilizing the latest IMAX film technology to bring this mythic action story to life on the big screen. Universal Pictures confirmed in December that this will be the first time Homer’s The Odyssey is brought to IMAX film screens, adding to the excitement surrounding its release.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026, and is expected to be one of the most talked-about blockbusters of the year.
Fans are already eagerly anticipating the stunning visuals, thrilling action, and powerful performances this collaboration between Nolan and Damon is sure to bring. Stay tuned for more updates as we inch closer to the release date.
