The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating a cyberattack on Oracle that resulted in the theft of sensitive patient data, Bloomberg News reported on March 28. Hackers reportedly accessed Oracle’s servers after January 22, copying patient data to an external location. The attack targeted multiple U.S. medical providers in an extortion attempt.
Oracle, headquartered in Austin, Texas, alerted healthcare customers earlier in March about the breach, which involved older servers from Cerner Corp, a healthcare IT company Oracle acquired in 2022 for $28 billion. The compromised data had not yet been migrated to Oracle’s cloud storage service. The breach also raises concerns due to Oracle’s $16 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The FBI has declined to comment, and Oracle has yet to respond to inquiries. The exact number of affected patient records and targeted healthcare providers remains unclear. The incident underscores the growing cybersecurity risks in the healthcare sector.
