Emma Mackey, known for her breakout role in Sex Education, has secured a major part in Netflix’s upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia film, directed by Barbie filmmaker Greta Gerwig. This marks a reunion for the two after the massive success of last year’s billion-dollar blockbuster.
Mackey will step into the iconic role of Jadis, better known as the White Witch — a character previously portrayed by Tilda Swinton in the 2005-2010 film series. Unlike previous adaptations that focused on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Gerwig’s film will be based on The Magician’s Nephew, a prequel novel that explains the origins of Narnia and the infamous lamppost.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mackey was selected after a competitive final round against The Substance star Margaret Qualley, ending earlier rumors linking Charli XCX to the role.
In addition to Mackey’s casting, legendary actress Meryl Streep is reportedly in talks to voice Aslan, the great lion. Netflix plans to give the film a limited two-week theatrical run, including IMAX screenings, before its global streaming debut.
Mackey’s career continues to ascend, with several upcoming projects including the LGBTQ+ romance Ella McCay, a political comedy, and a JJ Abrams project alongside Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega.
