Election Timeline Pushed Again, Says Yunus’s Aide; Rejects Awami League’s Return in the Name of Inclusiveness

Dhaka, May 23, 2025 — The timeline for Bangladesh’s national election has been pushed back once again, with hopes now set for April–May 2025, according to Fayez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to interim Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

Speaking on Friday, Tayyeb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to holding a democratic transition but stressed that all necessary reforms must be completed before elections take place. “We hope the election will be held between April and May after completing all required preparations,” he said. This marks a delay from earlier expectations, further extending the country’s interim political period.

Tayyeb also issued a firm warning against what he called the “rehabilitation” of the Awami League under the pretext of political inclusiveness. “In the name of inclusiveness, the return of the Awami League cannot be accepted,” he declared.

He reiterated the importance of maintaining trust in the military, calling it a source of national pride and confidence. “The Bangladesh Army is our pride and a pillar of our trust—no one must violate that,” he stated.

The shifting election timeline and political messaging underscore the challenges facing the interim government, as pressure builds domestically and internationally for a credible and inclusive transition to elected leadership.
